We took Caitlin to the doctor today (thank you Aunt Amy for watching Conall) to see about the puking. He said it could be several things, but most likely since she had it as an infant, it is acid reflux. Apparently, once you've had it you are predisposed to get it again or to have a sensitive digestive system. He prescribed some medication. We also get to collect her poop (what a joy to be a parent -- I'm so glad she still wears diapers! As Aunt Susan said I'm now "Queen Poop" and Caitlin is "Princess Puke", there you go Conall, you ought to like that!) and take it in for lab tests to rule out a bacterial infection. If the symptoms aren't better in a week, he wanted us to bring her in for food allergy testing -- luckily just a blood test and not the horrible scratch tests I remember from my childhood.
After a nasty encounter with our prescription insurance company, we got her prescription filled and had her feeling better. (The insurance company refused to pay for the disolvable form of her medicine and suggested an over-the-counter pill. The pharmacist explained that it was for a young child and she couldn't swallow the pill. They pretty much told us tough and didn't recognize the pharmacist as expert enough to override their decision -- it would have to be the doctor and without it, the prescription would have been $192 for 3o days worth! Finally, between the doctors' office and the pharmacist, we got a different prescription that she has to take twice a day instead of once. I think we can handle that at $10 a month instead of $192 a month!)
She ate a really good dinner tonight (the first time all week) and kept asking for more food. She kept going from Stu's, Amy's and my plates begging for food and eating it (she hasn't done that in a long time). She went to bed pretty easily tonight, so we'll see how the rest of the night goes. If this is it, then the doctor seemed to think she'll start napping and sleeping better and eating better. Yippee! I hadn't realized how poorly she'd been eating or napping lately until we were talking to him today (having Conall home every day all day for 3 weeks will do that). I'll be glad to see my good little eater return.
On another note, Conall starts school tomorrow. He is so excited! I'm still not sure he's gone to sleep even though he's been in bed since 8 p.m. (it is now 9:30). We plan to meet the next-door neighbors in the morning and then we'll all walk to school. In pre-K they require you take your child in and sign them in every morning. There isn't much parking around the school and we can't pull into the drive, so the experienced moms have told us that walking is much easier if the weather is good. He has to be there by 7:40 so hopefully the weather will still be cool enough. Wish us luck!
