First Swim Lesson

Conall and Caitlin had their first swim lesson of the summer today. Conall is in a class with kids his age and Caitlin is in a Mommy and Me class. They both were super excited about starting classes this morning. In fact, for once we were all dressed, packed up (towels, etc), and ready to go early.

Caitlin was determined that she needed her swim ring and her toys. There was no telling her any different. I took some photos of them ready to go to kill some time and because they were being so cute!

Conall did really well. There are supposed to be two other boys in his class, but only one other child showed up. His swim teacher is a guy, which I think does make a difference for him. He swam all over that pool with swim noodles, a kick board, his swim teacher, etc. He also stuck his face in the water and blew bubbles. Conall has always hated getting his face wet, so it was wonderful to see him do this without any apprehension.

Caitlin was a different story. She did not want to be in the big pool and wrapped her arms and legs around me and screamed through the entire class. If she wasn't crying or screaming, she was yelling "I want on the porch (edge of the pool)", "I want out", "I want in the baby pool", "Put me down!" Such fun! In her defense, the water was cold this morning and I don't think she enjoys being cold. Otherwise, she was a little banshee.

Oh well, at least she is a sweet little banshee. When Conall was this age and in a Mom and Me swim class, he cried and screamed and kept pushing off of me to get away and try to get out. At least Caitlin just held onto me for dear life! She was like a little octopus attached to me!

When Conall's class was over, he didn't want to leave! I'm still so proud of him -- he did much better than I ever expected for his first class and for someone just getting over his fear of water! He can't wait to go back tomorrow.

I told her to stand still -- that's why the frown on her face

I can picture you with Caitlin plastered to you and even though I'm smiling I am also feeling your anxiety. Maybe she will get used to it. I hope it is just temporary.
I am proud of Conall because I was concerned about him being afraid like last year. Yay for him!!

Surely it will just be temporary. It was cute, but I did feel for her. We'll keep trying. She is perfectly happy to play in the baby pool at the neighborhood pool, so at least it isn't a complete fear of water.
